Galen Myotherapy

The world-leader in Canine Myotherapy education, treatment, and research

Our Galen Canine Myotherapy Diploma

The Galen Canine Myotherapy Diploma is a Level 3 externally accredited course through the Laser Learning Awards. This course has been successfully running for over 10 years, and was the first externally accredited course specialising in Canine Myotherapy / Canine Massage.

We have four versions of the diploma course ranging from the full course for those with no prior experience in canine physiology to our CPD for Vets. The course is structured into theory and practical sessions and students can sign on to the course at any time.

The courses are tailored specifically to the foundation knowledge of the learner but all of them will lead the student to being a fully trained Galen Canine Myotherapist. This allows them to support dogs that they own or already work with, or to embark on an exciting new career as a Galen Canine Myotherapist with the backing and support or the most established training school in the UK. We also work with international partners to deliver our diploma course at different locations around the world. You can read all about our schools in Australia and Norway by following this link.

We're also thrilled to announce that our Galen Myotherapy Diploma is now available in Spanish for students in Spain, or those who speak Spanish. You can read more about this on our international schools page or by downloading our Spanish Diploma Course Pack

What makes our Diploma course so different from others that are available?
There are several other providers of advanced canine massage techniques, many of whom had their roots in the training that Galen Therapy Centre provided. This alone demonstrates the quality of Galen Therapy Centre and the training we offer . However, there are several key differences which mean that the Galen Therapy Centre diploma stands head and shoulders in the field.

:: Choice led treatment

Other guilds, organisations or training companies teach students that it is acceptable to restrain dogs during treatment. We believe that this shows a disrespect for the animal, and have pioneered choice led treatment. This has evolved into an entire treatment principle - Positive PACT - which is being embraced in the veterinary world. Only our diploma includes in-depth training around this.

:: Accreditation

Whilst some other courses that are available have a level of accreditation available, there is no other training programme that has full coursework accreditation from an OFQUAL approved board. Other providers simply have their course approved by an accreditation service, however in our case all coursework is independently assessed by Laser Learning awards. This is one of the key reasons why our students enjoy a level of recognition that no other organisation can provide.

:: First in its field

We were the first organisation to train Canine Myotherapy (and indeed, we trained several of the founders of other guilds or organisations). Our heritage of delivering the course since 2002 means that we have a deep understanding of canine health, and a huge level of experience in treating dogs. This goes in hand with us remaining at the forefront of knowledge, due to our work with experts in the field such as Professor Daniel Mills and others.
:: Delivered by experts

Not only is our diploma taught by highly qualified Galen Myotherapists who have been invited all over the world, but our diploma is supported by other experts in their field. The first day of our practical sessions is a human anatomy and physiology day which is unique to Galen Myotherapy, and this is delivered by one one of the country's leading sports therapists. Alongside this, the practical sessions are supported by one of the most highly respected vets in the South of England.

:: Enrol at any time

Unlike courses by some other providers, you can enrol and start on the course at any time. There's no waiting for any enrolment dates; you can literally contact us and get started as soon as you're ready. The only dates that are fixed are our practical sessions, however we have two sessions available a year and both modular and intensive options available.

:: International Schooling

Most other training organisations are limited to the UK, whereas due to the global interest in the principles that we have developed we have a global reach. We work internationally, and have students from all over the world who study with us using our online Student Learning Platform. Further to this, we have international schools in both Norway and Australia and are in the process of opening more. We also are in development with partners in Barcelona and Bejing, with Spanish and Mandarin versions of the course coming in early 2020.

Who is the course for?
Our Level 3 diploma level course takes you through a logical process of learning that can be started at four different levels of knowledge, ranging from the Full Diploma course for those with no prior experience in canine physiology to our CPD for Vets.

Our diploma is suitable for:
  • Students seeking our most in-depth course
  • If you're looking for longer study over a period of two years
  • People looking to embark on a new career as a Canine Myotherapist
  • Vets or Vet Professionals looking for CPD

How is the course structured?
The Full, Direct Access and Diploma for Veterinary Professional course starts with the theory units which can be completed online via our dedicated Student Portal with support from tutors. All the theory elements are to be completed before commencing on the practical application component to ensure a good level of learning before the application of knowledge.

All diploma students including those studying the Vet CPD will attend the practical application element of the course.

It consists of 10 days of intense and unique learning which is scientifically substantiated. We’ve created a two stage guided learning experience, which provides in-depth study and practical application of Galen Myotherapy, but also allows a period of supported independent study to allow the information time to embed.

The first 5 days are delivered through interactive webcasts, online seminars with discussion groups and Q&A sessions with some independent learning and full access and support from your dedicated tutor.

You’ll learn:
  • Human and canine postural assessment
  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics
  • Assessing superficial anatomy of the canine
  • Assessing canine biomechanics in relation to loading and posture
  • Functional movement patterns and identification of compensatory issues
  • Impacts of environment on the musculoskeletal system
  • In-depth learning of the relationship between pain and behaviour
  • Theory and application of the Galen Comfort Scale©
  • Positive PACT® treatment protocol (scientifically supported)

This is a unique learning opportunity to gain a deep understanding of muscle dysfunction in both humans and canine.

This is followed by 5 days hands-on training which will be focused on developing your hands-on techniques, rehabilitative functional movement and exercises on a variety of dogs so you gain a plethora of hands-on experience so you can confidently apply Galen Myotherapy techniques.

You’ll learn:
  • Practical anatomy from a functional and applied perspective
  • Translating canine’s muscles, fascia and skeleton directly onto a dog
  • Assessment of canine physical integrity, observations and comparisons of movement
  • Massage technique application and palpation skills

How is the course accredited and assessed?
The Galen Canine Myotherapy Diploma is a Level 3 course externally accredited by the Laser Learning Awards. Our diploma course has been successfully running for over 10 years, and was the first externally accredited course specialising in canine myotherapy.

The theory work is broken down into tasks which can be answered in a variety of formats including essays, video, template completion, diagram and forms to create a flexible and engaging learning process. There are no final theory exams as tutors continually assess knowledge throughout the course as each task is assessed on submission via our secure Student Portal. This ensures regular constructive and open feedback so all students are clear as to the expectations of the course.

During the practical there are a range of summative and formative assessments including discussing case studies with a veterinary specialist. Unique to the Galen Diploma, the first practical session is one where we look at human anatomy as a primer to canine functional anatomy which is always a highlight for students.

When can I start the course?
You can start the course at anytime as the theory element of the course can be completed via our dedicated Student Portal. It’s only the practical element which is completed at certain times in the year. The practicals are limited to 10 places to ensure individual attention and feedback.

How long does the course take?
On average students embarking on the full diploma course normally graduate within two years which is based on a student studying alongside a full-time job. Due to the accreditation requirement, the whole course must be completed within one year of starting the practical element.

Course Version:

I looked at so many courses that are available, but I'm so glad that I decided to study with you. The difference for me was the way you give dogs choice, and I couldn't imagine working any other way. Since graduating I've been able to support my dogs, and the support you gave me in marketing have allowed me to build a client base in my local town and beyond.

I couldn't imagine not being part of Galen Therapy Centre now, thank you SO much!
